5 prompting habits straight from AI's own makers (not internet folklore)

Search "best AI prompts" and you'll drown in listicles of copy-paste one-liners. The people who actually build these models publish something more useful: plain guidance on how to ask, not just what to ask. We read through the public prompting guides from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google and pulled the five habits that make the biggest difference — re-explained here in plain English, not their exact wording.

5 habits the model-makers actually teach1Give it a roleAnswers change completely once AI knows WHO to be2Show 2-3 examplesA style match beats an adjective every time3Ask it to grade itselfA free second opinion from the same model4Specify the shapeA table beats a paragraph you have to reformat5Ask for a better promptFix a vague question before you even ask it
Five habits, none of them a "magic prompt."

1. Tell it who to be before you tell it what to do

Assigning a role up front — "answer as a skeptical CFO," "answer as a patient teacher" — changes what the model pays attention to before it writes a single word. It's the single most consistently taught technique across every major lab's own documentation.

2. Show it examples instead of describing a style

"Make it punchy" is a guess. Pasting 2-3 real examples of what "good" looks like is a pattern the model can actually match. This is sometimes called few-shot prompting, and it's dramatically more reliable than adjectives.

3. Ask it to critique its own answer

One extra line — "now critique that like a tough editor would" — routinely surfaces a weaker word choice, a missing angle, or a lazy generality the first pass missed. It costs one follow-up message and it's nearly free quality.

4. Say exactly what shape you want back

"Tell me about this" invites a wall of text you'll have to reformat yourself. Asking for the exact structure — a table with named columns, a 3-bullet summary, a specific word count — gets you something you can use immediately.

5. Let it write you a better question

Stuck on how to even ask? Describe the mess in your own words and have AI turn it into a sharper prompt before answering it. This "meta-prompting" move fixes the single biggest cause of a disappointing answer: a vague ask.

None of this requires a better model

Every one of these habits works today, in whatever AI you already have open. The gap between a mediocre answer and a great one is almost never the model — it's the ask. Practice these five and you'll notice it immediately.
